Wk 13: Coastal Hazards

Image
It has been reported that there are different coastal hazards that occur in the United Arab emirates including, coastal flood high, river flood low, landslide low, and tsunami low. In this area coastal flood hazard is classified as high according to the information that is available currently. All of this means that potentially-damaging waves can be expected to flood the coast. With this information we should consider all of the project for any activities that may be located near this coast. For example, project planning decisions, project design, as well as construction methods. It is also said that sea level will increase with a mean sea level rise.  It is recommended that we take all of these steps into account, emergency response plans like identifying the regional and national governments response policy and protocols and incorporate as needed. Technical expertise is also recommended, consulting with a expert that is familiar with coastal flooding ca...

Mass Wasting

 * The United Arab emirates is classified as high risk in land slides which means that it has high rainfall patterns, terrain slope, geology, soil, land cover and potential earthquakes.  * This info should make for planning decisions such as project siting, project design, and construction methods, must be taken into account for potential landslides.  *Climate change is also more likely to alter slope and bedrock stability  through temperature. It can also be very difficult to determine future locations and large rock avalanches because these depend on local geological conditions and other factors that don't have anything to do with climate.

Volcanoes

Volcanic Hazards in the UAE There are 127 volcanoes as of January 9 2024. Saudi Arabia has some volcanoes and in fact it is active. There is volcanic activity on an Arabian plate locates on the eastern side of the Red Sea rift. There is a large part of of volcanic field and its known as the Harrat Khaybar, which is named after a city that lays on the western side. However there is only one eruption recorded which took place in early islamic times during the 7th century CE. The white volcanoes In the center of the Harrat Khaybar lays a rare kind of silica comendite that makes it appear white. The two biggest are Jebel Abiadh and the Jebel Bayda. Earthquakes

Image
The northeastern part of this country is the most seismically active. Earthquakes are not common in the United Arab Emirates, they do experience tremors however and this is specifically in Iran. There are 7.0 earthquakes that cause damage within a radius of over 100 kilometers. The most recent earthquake that has taken place was in the province of Hormozgan and it measured 6.4. The reason in which this place is high risk for earthquakes is because of the tectonic plates at the Gulf of Oman when one shift below the other causing a tremendous quake. Something that we can do in dealing with this, is really informing ourselves how we can stay safe during times like these. For example there is the app, Myshake that can let you know when to take cover seconds before a shake. This earthquake warning uses ground motion sensors to detect earthquakes.  source:https://www.thenationalnews.com/uae/2024/01/09/earthquake-uae/#:~:text=Earthquakes%20are%20rare%20in%20the,on%20the%20UAE%2...
